Underground Conduit Route, Handhole and Pull-Path Planning

A conduit system must work as one continuous pathway. Use this guide to define its purpose, segments, access points, bends, transitions, capacity, verification, and handoff before requesting a construction bid.

Intended use and governing standards

Identify what the pathway will carry, who owns it, where it begins and ends, and which issued drawings, specifications, utility-owner standards, road-owner requirements, codes, or manufacturer criteria govern. A communications duct bank, power pathway, private-campus route, and public ITS installation may have different access, separation, identification, loading, and documentation requirements.

Create a document hierarchy for conflicts and name the designer or owner representative authorized to resolve them. The route should not be sized or detailed from generic examples when a project-specific standard applies.

Conduit count, size, material, and future capacity

  • Record each conduit’s count, nominal size, material, wall or pressure class where specified, color, and intended occupant.
  • Define innerduct, pull rope, tracer wire, detectable warning, spacers, caps, plugs, and identification requirements.
  • Show occupied, spare, and reserved pathways rather than describing the bundle only by total count.
  • Identify bend limits, joint method, approved fittings, minimum cover, separation, and encasement requirements from the governing documents.
  • Assign material supply, receiving inspection, storage, installation, damage replacement, and surplus disposition.

Future capacity is an owner and design decision. If spare ducts or expansion space are desired, place them on the issued scope and define how they will be sealed, identified, proofed, and documented.

Route continuity from origin to destination

Trace every segment on a single route schedule. Mark start and end points, stationing or dimensions, elevations or depth criteria, property and right-of-way boundaries, crossings, structures, tie-ins, and responsibility changes. Reconcile plan, profile, details, and quantity schedules so a segment is not lost between sheets.

Document interfaces with buildings, poles, cabinets, equipment pads, existing ducts, and work by other contractors. A continuous line on a plan is not enough when the physical pathway crosses contract packages or depends on a future connection.

Bends and pull-path constraints

Evaluate the installed pathway from the planned cable or product pull, not only from conduit constructability. The authorized design should define allowable bend radius, cumulative bend, pull length, pulling tension, sidewall pressure, lubricant, intermediate assist, and access requirements as applicable. Coordinate those limits with changes in direction, elevation, and conduit transitions.

Ask the designer or cable-installation party to confirm that each access-to-access segment is pullable. If that party requires a mandrel, swab, rope, measured rope capacity, or other acceptance step, state the procedure and record format in the contract.

Handholes, vaults, and access points

Locate access structures according to the designed pull plan, connection needs, maintenance strategy, property limits, drainage, loading, clearance, and safe access. Specify structure type, dimensions, covers, frames, knockouts or entries, sump or drainage details, racking, grounding, labeling, and elevation only where the governing design requires them.

Do not assume Golden Road furnishes handholes, vaults, covers, or internal hardware. The material schedule and executed scope should separately name who designs, supplies, sets, connects, inspects, and accepts each structure.

Stub-ups, terminations, and future connections

Show the exact location, elevation, orientation, length, bend, support, and protection of every stub-up or stub-out. Identify temporary caps, permanent seals, bushings, fire or water stopping, markers, and connection ownership. Where a future phase will continue the route, provide a durable endpoint reference and protection requirement.

Coordinate exposed or building-entry work with the responsible electrical, communications, structural, architectural, and owner teams. The civil installer should not infer equipment-entry details that belong in another design package.

Bore/trench transitions and construction access

Segment the route by proposed construction method and identify transition pits, changes in depth, coupling or casing details, restoration limits, and inspection points. A bore may protect a sensitive crossing while trenching serves nearby access structures and tie-ins; both pieces must meet at a coordinated elevation and location.

Mark equipment access, staging, product laydown, spoil or fluid handling, work windows, traffic constraints, and temporary-use boundaries. These inputs help bidders evaluate whether the planned route can be built without changing the issued system layout.

Proofing and testing responsibility

The contract should state what constitutes an accepted pathway and who performs, witnesses, records, and approves each check. Depending on the governing specification, that may include visual inspection, mandrel or proofing, swabbing, pull-rope installation, continuity checks for locating components, structure inspection, or other project-defined testing.

Golden Road’s scope cannot be inferred from this list. Confirm proofing equipment, acceptance criteria, failed-test response, retest responsibility, and final signoff in the executed agreement. Cable testing is a separate question from conduit-pathway proofing.

As-built handoff and closeout package

Before work begins, define the records needed at turnover. Useful fields can include route dimensions or coordinates, depth observations, structure locations and elevations, conduit schedule, transition points, changes from the issued design, photographs, material records, proofing results, rope status, caps and seals, punch-list resolution, and acceptance signatures.

Name the party responsible for collecting field information, preparing record documents, validating them, and delivering the final format. A marked-up drawing may support closeout but does not automatically satisfy an owner’s engineered record-drawing requirement.
